Hitting the right notes in choosing a music school and Instructor

It’s safe to say that almost everyone has a
pretty good understanding of the value and benefit of musical education.
Musical participation enhances creative thought processes, problem solving,
goal setting, team work, self-confidence, poise and many other valuable life
skills. However, people are not so sure about where to go for music lessons or
what to look for in a music instructor. Here are answers to some of the
questions you need to ask.
What is the background and experience of the instructor? Find an instructor that “knows their stuff”. They should not only have a
well-studied musical background, but also significant performance and teaching
experience. Without this very important experience, it would be like learning
to drive from someone who knows the rules of the road but has never actually
driven a car. Note that all instructors teaching youth should have a criminal
background check.
What do current and past clients say? Word of mouth is by far the best form of advertising any business, and
especially teaching, can have. If the clients aren’t raving about the
quality of instruction and the service you may want to keep looking. Have you
been invited to go to the lounge at any time to see for yourself, and ask
questions, about what is happening? This offer is a great indicator of the
calibre of the staff and institution.
What else does the music school offer its students apart from lessons? A good music school will provide its members with lots of opportunities to
perform. Let’s face it, having a weekly lesson, practising in your room for a ½
hour per day and waiting until your next lesson is just not enough. T-Rox Music
Academy is very active in this aspect. One of our most popular programs is our
Band Factory program. But you still need to have an outlet. We host all-ages
Jam Nite on the last Sunday of every month as well as two Show Time recitals
per year. There are several other performance opportunities as well.
T-Rox Music Academy has a stage in this year’s Southside Shuffle in Port Credit
where some of our instructors and students will perform.
There are many more questions you might ask, but these should get you started
in choosing the right music school and instructor.
